Two New Games: Briscola and Old Maid!
Hello my friends! We've got not one, but two brand new games for you here on Cardgames.io: the classic Italian trick-taking game Briscola, and the childhood favorite Old Maid.
Briscola is one of the most popular card games in Italy. Following with the success of Escoba and Skat, our other two recent regionally popular games we decided that Briscola would be an excellent fit.
Briscola is a trick-taking game played with a 40-card Italian deck, and can be played with 2 to 6 players, albeit as usual our upper limit is 4 on the site. Being a quick game Briscola offers a good balanced middle ground for the morning commute or over the lunch time break, and is a great way to get your friends together for a few quick rounds of fun. It also allows us to reuse our beautiful Spanish suited deck, which is a nice bonus.
Old Maid is a much simpler game, and is perfect for kids and families - which is generally how most of us learned the game under whichever regional name it carried. In Iceland we took a page from the Dutch and called it "Svarti Pétur" (Black Peter), while in the US it was known as "Old Maid". The game is played with a standard deck of cards, but with one card removed, leaving one card without a pair. The goal is to avoid being the player left holding that unpaired queen at the end of the game.
Old Maid can be played with 2 to 4 players, against the computer or with friends at a private table. While I don't suppose it'll hold the attention of the more serious card players, it is a fun game for kids and families - and sometimes you just want to play a game that mostly plays itself instead of having to agonize over complex strategy. So if you have kids, or just want a quick and easy game to play with friends, give Old Maid a try!
What's next?
Both games are available now on the website. We hope you enjoy them, and as always please send us your feedback, suggestions or bug reports at support@cardgames.io.
The games will be available in the iOS and Android apps once the next update is released, which should be in the next few weeks assuming all goes well.
Have fun!
